How to prepare for IPMAT

Preparing for the IPMAT exam calls for strategic efforts as it seeks to test our abilities in both QA and VA. Here’s a step-by-step guide on preparing for IPMAT, including study strategies, tips, and resources.

1. Familiarize Yourself with the Exam Pattern and Syllabus

Before preparing, one should be well-versed with the exam pattern and syllabus.

2. Prepare a Study Schedule

A proper study schedule is essential for concentrated preparation. Here’s how you can split your preparation:

  • Set Realistic Goals: Organize your practice in incremental blocks of time. Also, set week-by-week, month-by-month, and all-round study goals.
  • Time Allocation: Spend much time practising quantitative ability as it is more difficult for most candidates. Do not forget to spend daily time practising Verbal Ability.

3. Focus on Strengthening Fundamentals

Since IPMAT is oriented towards high school-level concepts, both in QA and in VA, an effort must first be made to refresh the basic concepts.

Preparing for QA

Cover these topics below:

  • Arithmetic: Percentages, Profit & Loss, Simple & Compound Interest, Time-Speed-Distance, Work & Time.
  • Algebra: Linear Equations, Quadratic Equations, Functions, Inequalities
  • Geometry: Lines, Angles, Circles, Triangles, Coordinate Geometry
  • Number System: Divisibility Rules, HCF & LCM, Remainders.
  • Data Interpretation: Bar graphs, Pie charts, Line graphs, Tables.

Strategy

  • Conceptual Clarity: Your basics must be good. Understand the theory behind every concept before trying problems.
  • Solve various problems: Try various questions from multiple resources to enhance your problem-solving skills.
  • Use Shortcuts: Learn tricks and shortcuts to save time on complicated arithmetic and algebra questions.
  • Timed Practice: Get regular practice at timed tests for building speed and accuracy.

Verbal Ability (VA) Preparation

Topics to Cover:

  • Reading Comprehension: Know a passage’s central idea, tone, and structure.
  • Grammar: Sentence correction, tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions.
  • Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and phrases.
  • Verbal Reasoning: Logical reasoning questions that test language-based problem-solving.

Strategy:

  • Reading Comprehension: Read various texts—newspapers, novels, business magazines, etc. Focus on improving your reading speed and comprehension.
  • Practice Grammar: Regularly solve grammar exercises to enhance sentence structure, punctuation, and accuracy.
  • Vocabulary Building: Learn new words daily and use them in your writing or conversation—practice word lists from popular vocabulary books or apps.
  • Solve Previous Year Papers: Understanding the type of RC and grammar-based questions asked in past exams will help you get familiar with the exam pattern.

4. Practice Regular Mock Tests and Previous Year Papers

Mock Tests: Regularly take full-length mock tests under timed conditions to simulate the actual exam. This helps improve your time management and builds exam-day stamina. Aim to take at least one mock test every week. AceIPM offers comprehensive mock tests designed explicitly for IPMAT aspirants. As the difficulty of AceIPM mocks typically increases progressively, you can build your skills over time, ensuring you’re prepared for any surprises in the exam.

After completing a test, thoroughly analyze your performance, identify weak areas, and work on improving them.

Previous Year Papers: You can understand the question pattern, difficulty level, and areas to focus on by solving past IPMAT papers. Practice with last year’s papers regularly.

Importance of mocks and analysis

1. Awareness of the Pattern and Design of the Examination

The IPMAT examination includes the sections of Quantitative Aptitude and Verbal Ability. Both sections have a set of specific question types, level of difficulty, and time bounds. Repeated mocks allow you to experience firsthand the actual structure of the exam.

Mock tests simulate the exact exam pattern, including the time limit for each section and the format of the questions (Multiple Choice Questions). This helps you get accustomed to the exam flow so you can manage your time well and approach questions strategically on the actual test day.

2. Building Exam Stamina and Time Management Skills

IPMAT is a time-bound exam, so adequate time management for both sections is crucial. Regular mock tests help you develop the ability to complete the exam within the given time frame without feeling that you are being rushed or not having enough time.

Through mocks, you can practice, Time management techniques and quick decision-making: Deciding how much time to spend on each question. Skipping difficult questions: Identifying questions that consume too much time and moving on to others. Maintaining a smooth flow: The candidate will leave no question incomplete.

3, Knowing Your Strong and Weak Positions

The mock test gives you an authentic time assessment in both quantitative and Verbal ability.

  • For Quant: You’ll know which subjects, such as arithmetic, algebra, or data interpretation, to focus more on
  • For Verbal: You should know whether you read efficiently, make sense of grammatical rules, and understand the reading questions correctly

Regularly taking mocks helps you track your progress and compare your performance. This will give you insights into the areas that need improvement and where you excel.

4. Reducing Exam Anxiety

One of the best ways to beat exam anxiety is having first-hand experience. You get accustomed to the pressure, time constraints, and the whole experience of sitting for a long exam while taking mocks regularly. Familiarity breeds confidence; taking more mocks will make you less stressed during the IPMAT exam.

5. Time Management

  • QA Section: The math problems are usually lengthy and, hence, take a lot of time—practice solving questions in a given time frame with an emphasis on speed and accuracy.
  • VA Section: Although the VA section may appear less time-consuming, speed should not compromise careful reading, especially for reading comprehension. Practice skipping questions that take too long.

6. Develop Analytical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

Apart from practising standard problems, work on your logical and analytical thinking by solving puzzles, brainteasers, and riddles. This will enhance your decision-making speed in both the QA and VA sections.

7. Study Quality Course Material

Following are some textbooks for IPMAT preparation:

QA-related Books:

  • R.S. Aggarwal: Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations
  • Disha Experts: IIM Indore IPMAT Quantitative Ability
  • Arun Sharma: How to Prepare for Quantitative Aptitude for the CAT

VA-related Books:

  • Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis for your vocabulary-building
  • High School Grammar & Composition by Wren & Martin
  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension by Arun Sharma & Meenakshi Upadhyay

8. Maintain Consistency and Concentration

Consistency is a key to be followed while getting prepared for the IPMAT. Design a proper timetable, spend some time revising regularly, and stay focused on your goals, even if you are sometimes faced with difficulties; carry on and redefine your skills.

Essential Tips for Preparing IPMAT

  • Plan Early: Schedule your preparation schedule at least 6-8 months before the exam to generate sufficient time for developing concepts and practice.
  • Remain Calm and Confident: IPMAT requires mental clarity and calmness. Stay positive and maintain a routine.
  • Don’t Overload: Try not to study too much in one day. Focus on learning concepts thoroughly.
  • Revise Constantly: Revision helps retain all you have studied and discover your weak areas.
