Speed vs Accuracy: What Matters Most in IPMAT

When it comes to succeeding in the IPMAT (Integrated Program in Management Aptitude Test), one of the major dilemmas every candidate faces is whether to focus on speed or prioritize accuracy. Hence the comparison arrives speed vs accuracy – what matters most in IPMAT exam?

It’s a legitimate question. The IPMAT, for the IPM Program conducted by IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak, and other IIMs, is a pressure test where time is extremely precious. However, at the same time, even one blunder of marking an answer wrong could mean the loss of valuable marks due to negative marking. So, which one really matters more: Speed or Accuracy?

1. Understanding the IPMAT Pattern

It is essential to understand how the test works before determining what to prioritize.

IPMAT Indore:

  • Quantitative Ability (MCQ): 40 questions (negative marking)
  • Quantitative Ability (Short Answer): 20 questions (no negative marking)
  • Verbal Ability: 40 questions (negative marking)

Total: 100 questions in 120 minutes

IPMAT Rohtak:

  • Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Ability: 40 questions each (negative marking)

Total: 120 questions in 120 minutes

The challenge is clear – you have approximately 1 minute per question and speed is important, but accuracy is just as important (if not more important) because, however quick you are, there is negative marking in the MCQ.

2. Why Speed Matters

In a time-sensitive exam, like IPMAT, speed is a determining factor in how much of the paper you can actually attempt. You can know everything, but if you can’t mark your answers within the time frame, it really doesn’t matter.

Speed = Opportunity

The faster you go through the easy questions, the more time you have for the difficult questions. Many toppers recommend looking for and marking the “sure-shot” questions as a first step to take advantage of the answer opportunities.

Builds Confidence

Solving questions quickly, and more importantly, solving them correctly, in the first few minutes, builds your momentum and confidence. This momentum and confidence are necessary for sustaining your concentration through the lengthy test.

Time Management Advantage

Your speed will help you manage sections effectively. You can allocate the important time between the Quant, Verbal, and LR sections (Rohtak) and will be more assured that you will not be caught with no time to attempt any section.

3. Why Accuracy Matters

Speed may help you to answer more questions, but what if you get them wrong? In IPMAT, every wrong answer will decrease your score.

Negative Marking is Unforgiving

Both IPMAT Indore and Rohtak have negative marking for wrong answers (–1 mark for MCQs). If you guess and attempt 10 more questions than you normally would (half of which are wrong), you may decrease your total score instead of increasing it.

Accuracy is Proportional to Conceptual Understanding

IPMAT is testing your understanding of fundamental concepts, not just how well you can guess correctly. Again, when you attempt a question, if you have high accuracy, it can be said, especially in Quantitative Aptitude, that you have constructed a better conceptual understanding.

Helps in Cut-off and Composite Score

Every section will have a cut-off. Making balanced attempts and ensuring accuracy can help you avoid missing out on shortlisting.

4. The Ideal Balance: Speed vs Accuracy

This is the reality – speed and accuracy are not adversaries. The trick to solving IPMAT is understanding how to navigate them both.

Step 1: Knowing Your Strengths

  • If you are strong in Quantitative Ability, focus on the accuracy – those marks will be the differentiating factor.
  • If Verbal Ability is your strength, you will need speed for your attempts in that section.

Step 2: Practice Smartly

Timed mock exams and timed practices are your best friends during this process. IPMAT Mock tests and sectional quizzes, such as those available on AceIPM, are a great way to simulate the pressure you would find in the real exam. Analyze not only your final score, but also:

  • How much time did you take per question
  • Where you fell with accuracy
  • And which topics slowed you down?

Step 3: Develop Accuracy First, Speed Second

Begin your preparation by ensuring that you have a clear understanding of the content. Once you reach around 85-90% accuracy, you can begin to focus on improving your speed through drills and timed tests.

Final Verdict: Accuracy Leads, Speed Follows

If you are targeting IPMAT Indore or Rohtak, please keep this in mind:

Speed will get you to the question, but accuracy will get you the mark.

First, strengthen your fundamentals, and then build upon that base to learn how to solve problems more efficiently with a consistent approach to mock practice. A perfect performance on IPMAT will not come from answering more questions, but answering better. All the best!
